#GameDayEve #NYvWIL Edition

By Marissa Blackman

The 2016 USL season continues for ninth place Wilmington Hammerheads FC with an away match against second place New York Red Bulls II. In their previous encounter, these two clubs fought right down to the last minute. Both keepers were kept busy with extremely close shots, and both teams were frustrated by disallowed goals.

The Red Bulls haven’t lost since May 1st, and did not compete in the Open Cup. The team is on a seven game unbeaten streak..

In USL play, the Hammerheads haven’t lost since May 21st. The team is on a four game unbeaten streak. In the past few weeks, the Hammerheads have also advanced through rounds two and three of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. The club's Open Cup run ended in penalty kicks of a round four match against MLS club Real Salt Lake.

Here are a few side-by-side comparisons of each team's statistics:

  • Bruno Perone, Mael Carboz, Jeff Michaud, Justin Moose, and John Smits have all appeared in thirteen games for the Hammerheads. Perone is also the leading goal scorer of the team with a total of four goals scored. Mael Carboz has made four assist, the most in the club. Brandon Allen, Derrick Etienne have played the most games (12) for the Red Bulls.
  • The Red Bulls have a higher save rate and lower goals against average than the Hammerheads.
  • The Hammerheads have scored two more goals in the first half than the second.
  • With 16 goals and 43 shots on goal, 37% of the Hammerheads shots make it in.
  • With 19 goals and 72 shots on goal, 26% of the Red Bulls shots make it in. Although the results that each team has earned are different, there is not a huge gap in goal scoring between the two clubs, and the Hammerheads statistically make more effective shots.
  • Wilmington ties more often, and New York wins more often.
  • Both teams have completed 13 games, and the Red Bulls have earned 11 more points than the Hammerheads.
  • The four Hammerheads losses have been to Richmond, Charleston, and New York. Charleston and Richmond are two always challenging teams to beat. The only New York loss of the season has been to Charlotte.
  • The most the Hammerheads have scored in one game is three goals. The most the Red Bulls have score in one game is four goals.
  • The Hammerheads' worst defeat was a 1-2 loss to Charleston.  The Red Bulls worst defeat was a 0-2 loss to Charlotte.
The Hammerheads are on an up swing.  In most categories, the NYRB II has made a better record this season, but the Hammerheads seem to be improving every game.Open Cup games can be a detriment to some clubs because they require more games in the same amount of time, but, for the Hammerheads, the competition has served as a catalyst. Both clubs are certainly capable of capitalizing on Sunday's opportunity to earn another three points.

"Not Everyone Is Messi"

By Marissa Blackman Brace yourselves because I'm about to go on a little rant! I can't be the only one who notices these things. I like to get my soccer content from a wide variety of sources. I scroll along the meme-based, click bait ridden accounts just much as I prowl through the latest writings from more reputable sources of "news." For the past several weeks, I've been seeing posts showing Cavani and Neymar debating over who will take a kick. They all have captions along the lines of "not everyone is Messi." I get what they're saying. Messi would let Neymar take the kick, but Cavani isn't going for that. Ok. Fine. But...there is something so grammatically terrible about that phrase. It must make sense to somebody, but it racks my brain. There's an even bigger problem with these incessant posts. Neymar has been trying to take a kick for weeks. Cavani has been telling him no for weeks. Cavani has ultimately taken most, if not all, of

Hammerheads Tie Montreal

by Marissa Blackman For the second time this season, the Wilmington Hammerheads FC  competed against FC Montreal. Although the first half of the match was competitive, both teams were lacking at times. There was a bit of disconnection in passes between the Hammerheads in the early minutes of the match which lead to some preventable turnovers. Montreal certainly made its presence known by maintaining a fair share of possession, but the Canadian club never did much with the ball. Each time Montreal attempted to approach the goal, the Hammerheads cleared the ball. There were virtually no moments in the first half where Montreal made a real threat of a goal. The Hammerheads made several goal attempts but none were successful. Although the first half was a goalless one, the Hammerheads seemed much more likely to score. In the second half, Montreal had a larger presence. Though FC Montreal maintained possession in the first minutes after half time, the efforts did not force Hammerheads

No futebol europeu, a velocidade durante a partida inteira é algo natural.
